About the Course

Within the Herbalist Program, students will begin by learning about the development and influence of herbal medicine throughout history around the world. The course discusses the origins of herbalism and ancient practices leading up to the new innovations and role it plays in our modern society. Students will also become familiar with key events and individuals who shaped what we have come to know as herbalism today. In this section, the Herbalist Program moves into an interesting discussion on plant anatomy, where students will analyze plant parts, functions, and processes. Additionally, students will learn about plant classifications and kingdoms, as well as identification by various plant family characteristics. The section ends with exploring harvesting concepts ranging from avoiding poisonous plant species to preservation techniques. The Herbalist Program then guides students through various herbal remedies and how to prepare them. Beginning with equipment and measurements and working up to learning herbal recipes and dosages, students will be able to gain hands-on experience in preparing herbal medicine.
